It's that time of the year again that many of us look forward to: tax season. It may not be the most exciting task, but it's of great importance. If you generate income, you are required to pay a portion of it to the government as taxes. By paying taxes, crucial projects such as building schools, hospitals, and roads can be funded.

But how does paying taxes work exactly? It sounds more complicated than it actually is. At the end of January, you received an overview from us of how much money you have earned and how much tax has already been deducted. This is also called the yearly statement. With this yearly statement, you can then do your tax return. You can find this yearly statement in your online account!
What is a tax return?
A tax return is actually a form on which you indicate how much you have earned and what expenses you have incurred, such as travel expenses for commuting. Based on this information, the government calculates how much tax you owe. In some cases, this may result in a nice refund for you.
How to file your tax return?
Fortunately, you can easily fill out your tax return yourself on the website of the Tax and Customs Administration. All you need is a DigiD. This is a kind of digital passport that confirms your online identity. If you need help filling out your tax return, you can turn to a family member or friend, an employee of the Tax and Customs Administration, libraries, and social organizations, such as trade and parent associations.
So, even though doing your tax return may seem like a boring and time-consuming task, it's of great importance to do it every year. This way, you contribute to the funding of important projects in our country, and not filing can result in a fine. So don't forget to submit your tax return on time. Therefore, also submit your return before July 14th!
